STAMFORD CELEBRATES ITS GEORGIAN HERITAGE

Stamford Georgian Festival

Well, what can we say other than what a fantastic weekend of events Stamford Georgian Festival turned out to be – and the weather was glorious! I know, we’re biased having organised many of the activities on behalf of South Kesteven District Council (who, with its partners, worked exceptionally hard to make this inaugural event such a success) but the initial feedback has been amazing with footfall for the town up by over 100% on the Saturday.

Hundreds watch the bull run re-enactment

Whether you enjoyed a carriage ride, visited the Georgian themed street market, groaned at Horrible Histories or delighted in attending one of the many talks and performances, there was definitely something for everyone. The re-enactment of the Stamford Bull Run certainly pulled the crowds on Saturday afternoon before the poor beast (he’d been beautifully crafted by performance artists Shademakers) met his demise on the Meadows to delighted cheers from the hundreds of onlookers!

Over 300 people enjoyed the sedate Georgian cricket match on Sunday until a series of lost balls required the acquisition of a tennis ball to allow play to continue!

Others delighted in watching the Bath Minuet Company demonstrating Georgian dances before joining in at the Tea Dance held in the Arts Centre’s Georgian Assembly rooms.

Overall, the weekend was wonderful to be involved in and we hope visitors enjoyed the experience as much as we enjoyed helping to organise the whole event – roll on next time!
